Dr Bakar Ba

Dr Bakar Ba is an interventional radiologist currently based at Wellington Hospital, New Zealand. Born and raised in Normandy, France, he completed his radiology training in 2010 and began his career with six years of service in the French Armed Forces, working at the prestigious Val-de-Grâce Military Hospital in central Paris.

He went on to complete a subspecialty in interventional radiology and oncology at Gustave-Roussy Institute under Professor Thierry De Baere, where he developed a strong foundation in image-guided oncologic therapeutic procedures. He later moved to New Zealand, first serving as Lead Interventional Radiologist in Tauranga before joining the team in Wellington.

Bakar’s main clinical interests lie in interventional oncology, including renal ablation cementoplasty, percutaneous osteosynthesis for bone pain management, and lung tumour ablation (RFA and cryotherapy- SOLSTICE trial). He also has a particular interest in radioembolization for liver malignancies such as advanced hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma. Beyond oncology, he is also involved in women’s health, especially in treating pelvic congestion syndrome using liquid embolic agents.

Throughout his 15-year career, he has been actively involved in registrar training and medical education. Outside of medicine, he enjoys surfing, yoga, and basketball, which he shares with his wife and three children.
